Carson City area weather: Weekend system to bring rain to the valleys, snow in Sierra

Another wet winter storm system will move into the region later this weekend, with forecasters in agreement that it will likely bring snow to the Sierra. But when it comes to Carson City, forecasters say it’s too early to predict if snow levels will lower to the valley floors. For now, the likelihood is rain Saturday night into Sunday, with maybe a few snow flurries.

For Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Saturday afternoon through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Right now there are a couple of scenarios that could happen. If a warmer system develops, then the Lake Tahoe area below 6,500 feet may see less than 6 inches of snowfall between Saturday night and Monday morning.

However, if the system is colder as it arrives, the Lake Tahoe area below 6,500 feet could see as much as 12-20 inches of snowfall. In either case, the Sierra crest, above 7,000 feet is likely to see more than 2 feet of snow.

For Monday, rain is likely around Carson City with the possibility of snow showers.

Wind continues to prevail ahead of the weather systems. A Wind Advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday night for Carson City, Carson Valley, Virginia City and the Reno and Sparks area.
