With a brief break in the weather and wind Saturday, another system will make its way into Carson City bringing colder temperatures and the possibility of heavy snow in the capital city Sunday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Carson City, Reno, Carson Valley, Dayton and Virginia City areas, as well as the Lake Tahoe Basin where up to a foot of snow is possible. The winter storm will become even more dangerous Sunday night and Monday morning for Mono, Mineral and southern Lyon counties. Winds will increase Sunday evening and remain strong through Monday morning, producing blizzard conditions especially after 10 pm. The combination of falling, blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibility to near zero, producing life threatening conditions.

Snow will likely develop around Carson City Sunday morning with periods of moderate to heavy snow by Sunday afternoon and evening, according to the weather service. The snow could bring anywhere between 3 to 6 inches down to the valleys with locally up to 8 inches.

Motorists can expect slick and snow covered roads even in lower elevations Sunday through Sunday night. This includes Interstate 80 and 580, Highway 50, 95 and Alternate 95.
