National Weather Service storm totals around Carson City and Carson Valley are impressive. After months of being without rain, Mother Nature chose Sunday to spring open the clouds and pour down the buckets after a week’s worth of near record-high temperatures, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, power outages, gusty winds and wildfires.

While not necessarily one for the books the weather over the past 7 days has certainly been memorable going from extreme high temperatures to large thunderstorms that produced nary a rain drop until this weekend. On Saturday, rain associated with the thunderstorms entered into the region, sparking several lightning fires that were quickly snuffed out by the heavy downpours.

Carson City wasn't out of the woods Saturday. Downpours were reported throughout Carson City and Douglas County Sunday afternoon that produced widespread ponding and some flash flooding. Power outages happened throughout the region, with lengthy ones along the south and east shores of Lake Tahoe where thousands were without power for several hours.

“An upper level disturbance and abundant moisture combined for heavy thunderstorms Sunday afternoon,” said meteorologist Wendell Hohmann.

Cleanup efforts continue today throughout south Carson City and north Douglas County.

Weather service spotters were still filing reports Monday morning. Go here for the latest updates.

The weather service says there’s a 20 percent chance for thunderstorms this afternoon and Tuesday. High will be in the mid-80s.
