The Carson High varsity boys basketball team remained unbeaten Friday night, surviving a scare from the host Galena Grizzlies whose second half surge provided for an exciting finish.
Carson broke out to an early lead, outscoring Galena 16-4 in the opening period.
The Senator defense held the hosts to seven points in the second quarter, maintaining an eight-point advantage, 19-11, at the half despite only scoring three points in those eight minutes before the break.
Then in the third quarter, the Grizzlies awoke and surged on an 18-10 run that left the game tied at 29 heading into the final frame.
The Senators clung to a slim lead in the fourth period, though, up by three with 18 seconds left.
Galena closed to within two points, but did not get any closer as Carson held on for the win.
Jayden DeJoseph led all scorers with a game-high 19 points, including four buckets from behind the three-point stripe. Teammate Asa Carter followed with 12 points.
Friday night’s victory preserves Carson High’s unbeaten streak, which is now at 14-0 in the Sierra League. The team is 12-5 overall this season.
Two more games are left on the regular season schedule, both home stands for the Senators, who entertain Bishop Manogue next on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Carson High School.
They then finish the season against their Carson Valley rival, Douglas High, next Friday, Feb. 12.
