LifePoint Church welcomes World Series pitcher and San Francisco Giants legend Dave Dravecky to speak at all three services on the weekend of October 22nd/23rd.
In 1987 Dave Dravecky had arrived as a Major League Baseball Pitcher. His career with the San Francisco Giants was soaring – until cancer struck his pitching arm. After a year of treatments and recovering, Dravecky returned to MLB with much anticipation. Only one game after winning in his highly publicized return to baseball, while pitching against the Expos, Dravecky’s pitching arm snapped mid-pitch. Before long, the cancer had returned, and with no option left, Dravecky announced his retirement from Major League Baseball. After multiple failed attempts to treat the cancer, he found himself an amputee.
“Everything familiar had been washed away, and I was face to face with what I had really lost. So much of my identity and worth was wrapped up in that arm and what it had been capable of doing. It had brought me joy. It had brought me financial security. It had brought me the fulfillment of my boyhood dream.” -Dave Dravecky
With his lifelong dreams gone, Dave and his wife, Jan found themselves learning to overcome depression. Their real-life struggles are a testimony to overcoming difficult circumstances and finding hope.
“As a fan, I was aware of Dave’s story when it happened. But later, as a cancer survivor myself, I was inspired by his ability to endure and find hope in his relationship with Jesus Christ through some very dark times. Whether or not you’re a baseball fan, hearing Dave tell about his journey in his own words will be powerful, and we are glad to invite everyone to hear this real life hero share his story.” Bill McCready, Lead Pastor.
