A plan that calls for the construction of 45 miles of non-motorized trails, including eight new trail heads along the west side of the Pine Nut Mountains in Douglas and Carson City counties is being considered.
The Bureau of Land Management, which is preparing an environmental assessment for the Carson Valley Discovery Trail, wants public suggestions and comments. OHV users have argued that the plan would impact trail and terrain use on public land. The project will be presented Thursday Nov. 1, to the Carson City Board of Supervisors at 8:30 a.m. and to the Douglas County Commissioners at 1 p.m.

The plan was submitted by the Carson Valley Trails Association, which advocates providing non-motorized recreation for the general public has proposed the trail. The BLM's environmental assessment will look at potential effects of trail building and maintenance.

The environmental assessment will evaluate the potential effects of trail construction and maintenance. The CVTA proposal includes:

— Construct and maintain 45 miles of new non-motorized trails along the west side of the Pine Nut Mountains;
— The trail system would include one primary trail with five loop trails;
— The new trails would involve BLM-managed lands and a small portion of lands managed by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest;
— Utilize two existing trailhead/access points for parking and trail information; and
— Modify or construct eight new trailhead/access points for parking and trail information.

The BLM would like to hear about any existing concerns or conflict of uses.

— Do you have knowledge of sensitive or unique resources within the proposed project area?
— Do you have knowledge of conflicts between recreation users within the proposed project area?
— Do you have knowledge of conflicts with the proposed trailhead/access points?
— Do you have other information about the proposed project area that could assist us with our evaluation?

A public workshop on the proposal will be held on Wed., Nov. 14, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Pinon Hills Elementary School, 1479 Stephanie Way, in Minden, Nev.

See below for the scoping stattement provided by the BLM. For additional information and a map of the proposed trail system go here.
