I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: Oct. 8-9

The weekend is here and you’ll find plenty to do in Carson City and the surrounding valleys. Run from zombies in Virginia City as the REDRUN obstacle race returns. Find the perfect pumpkin at the annual Seeliger Elementary Pumpkin Patch. The long-awaited Animal Shelter has been built and is now home to adoptable pets waiting for a home: take a tour at their open house after the 10 a.m. ribbon cutting. Keep reading and you’ll find a great way to enjoy the weekend.

SATURDAY:

  • Nevada Day Treasure Hunt: today’s clue at http://www.nvdaytreasurehunt.com/
  • Seniors Swim Free at Paradise Salon and Spa: Executive Pointe off College Pkwy (7am-5pm, except during Zumba class 9am-10am; 55 and older; indoor adult warm saltwater pools)
  • Coffee and Donuts with EAA Sierra Chapter 403 at 2500 E. College Pkwy (8:30am-12pm, all welcome)
  • Nevada Artists Association Art Exhibit featuring artists Anna Louise Dardin and Bob Hickox with Photography by Chas. H. McDonnell, III at the Carson Visitor Center (8am-5pm)
  • Redrun 4: Armageddon – zombie obstacle run in Virginia City (register/packet pick up 9am-12pm; zombies/living insane must be there by 10am; 8am-11:15am Body Paint at Mustang Ranch Steak House; 12pm Zombie Procession down ‘C’ Street; 1pm-3pm ‘Horde’ launches; After party near the Red Dog 5pm-7pm; register as either a runner $65+ or living insane $30+: choose 6.66 or 3.33 mile course)
  • Run for the Badge 5k Run/Walk at Mormon Station State Park, Genoa (check in 9am, run begins 9:45pm; $30; benefit for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund)

In the mood for something foreign? Check out the Daughters of Norway Scandinavian Festival. If you are looking to drown yourself in noodles, the Eldorado Italian Festival in Reno is the way to go.

  • Second Annual Slaughterhouse Lane Coffin Races at Heritage Park: 1447 Courthouse Alley, Gardnerville (10am-4pm, team check-in 9am; Bring a picnic lunch and a chair or blanket, food vendors on site)
  • Queen Maud Lodge #42 Daughters of Norway Scandinavian Festival at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church: 1201 Saliman Road (10am-2pm; cultural displays, lunch of Norse foods, baked goods, food demos, crafts, and more)
  • Eldorado’s Great Italian Festival: Downtown Reno (10am-6pm)

There are more than just zombies to be found in Virginia City today. St. Mary’s Art Center hosts a reception celebrating their new Fall Exhibition. Learn about the residents of yesteryear on a guided walking tour of the Silver Terrace Cemetery.

  • The President and the Prisoner’ presentation by Glen Whorton, former director of the Nevada Department of Corrections: a Nevada State Prison Preservation Society Fundraiser in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff’s Department (10:30am; $10 suggested donation)
  • Virginia City’s Redrum Saloon Crawl: (11am-5pm; $20 includes one free beer and free Themed Drink Samples and drink specials at several Historic Bars)
  • Pumpkin Patch Harvest Festival with Pig Races, Hay Slide, Kiddie Land, Straw Maze, Farm Animals and more at Corley Ranch: 859 Highway 395 South, Gardnerville (11am-5pm; admission $7, Seniors $5, under 2 free; additional cost for some rides, etc.)
  • Swim Class for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the Carson City Aquatic Facility (11am; $4)
  • Dog Town Rescue Adoption Event at PetSmart on Fairview (11am-3pm; all dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped)

Enjoy the final Carson High Drama performance of ‘A Voice in the Dark’ at the Community Center. Take a ‘Train to Danger’ on the Virginia and Truckee and enjoy dinner with a side of melodrama.

  • WARF Cat and Kitten Adoption Event at Petco on Topsy Lane (11am-4pm; all cats are fixed, vaccinated and micro-chipped)
  • Art Show and Sale: "Splendors from the Brush" by Nevada artist Darlene Grace Novy-Zuelke (1931-2011) at Maynard’s Station, Gold Hill (12pm-6pm)
  • Fall Art and Artisan Reception at St. Mary's Art Center: 55 R St, Virginia City (1pm-4pm)

Want to learn something new? Mike Thompson lectures on Killer Androids at the Western Nevada College Observatory. Telescope viewing begins around dusk, and you are likely see a few shooting stars.

For a night on the town, head to Westside Pour House for karaoke. Dance it up with DJs at Living the Good Life, Jimmy G’s, and SlotWorld Casino. Laugh out loud at the Brewery Arts Center: Nick Josten returns with his Stand-up Comedy Showcase.

Sundays are a great time for relaxing, but you’ve got some options around town just the same. Head out with Muscle Powered for their weekly bike ride, and that morning chill will be gone in no time. Get into the autumn mood at the Corley Ranch Pumpkin Patch Harvest Festival. Warm your belly and your heart at the Douglas County Empty Bowls dinner this evening: you’ll get all you can eat yummy stuff and a great bowl to take home.

SUNDAY:

  • Muscle Powered Weekly Bike Ride -Meet in the Freemont School South Parking Lot (8am; consists of two loops which are 10-15 miles long each, this will allow a rider to do 10-15 miles or 20-30 miles; ride pace will vary depending on rider level, but usually about 12-16 mph; email Shane shane@shanetrotter.net for questions about the ride; All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, helmet, and closed toed shoes. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to the meeting site)

Football isn’t the only game in town today, hit the rink at Marv Teixeira for some skating with the Sierra Inline Hockey League. BMXers have just a few more weeks of races before they wrap up for the season.
