A rainbow partially obscured by clouds was in Carson City's view this morning and captured in this photo by CCSO Sgt. Scott McDaniel. A winter storm with an atmospheric river is on its way and should last through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. There is a Wind Advisory in effect until 10 p.m. for the Carson City area.

Winds will continue to increase Friday with the strongest gusts in the afternoon into the evening. Gusts 60 mph to 80 mph are possible in wind prone areas along Highway 50 and 395, Interstate 580 and foothills around Carson City and Reno, Lyon and Storey counties.

Strong crosswinds and travel restrictions are likely, and damage to trees and fences may happen with power outages possible, according to the weather service. Those with loose outdoor items such as lawn furniture and trash cans should bring them in, have some flashlights and batteries and charge up the smart phones and tablets. It's also a good idea to bring the pets indoors.

For Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, rain and snow will follow, with showers beginning today and turning to snow later tonight with a rain and snow mix Saturday and snow on Sunday, according to the weather service.

For Lake Tahoe, there is a Winter Storm Warning for the basin, with snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet possible. The weather service advises motorists should try to avoid travel in the Sierra tonight and early Saturday morning.
