Sunday, December 11: Things to do in Carson City and beyond

In just two short weeks it will be Christmas Eve. Treat the kids to some quality time with Family Day at A to Zen or at the final performance of ‘Elf Jr. – The Musical.’ Let the Carson City Symphony get you in the spirit of the season at the 33rd Annual Holiday Treat Concert in the Community Center. Bring an unwrapped toy and you’ll get in for free to the Carson Victory Rollers’ annual ‘Season’s Beatings Red and Green Scrimmage.’ Keep reading for some great ways to spend the day.

SUNDAY:

  • Nevada Artists Association Art Exhibit featuring Jenny Schnabel at the Carson Visitor Center (8am-6pm)
  • Flying Pig Flea Market at Fuji Park (8am-3pm; $1 admission, kids free)
  • Muscle Powered Weekly Bike Ride - Meet in the south parking lot of Fremont Elementary School, next to the Linear Ditch Trail (meet at 9am; consists of two loops 10-15 miles long each, this will allow a rider to do 10-15 miles or 20-30 miles; ride pace will vary depending on rider level, but usually about 12-16 mph; All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, helmet, and closed toed shoes. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to the meeting site; email Shane shane@shanetrotter.net with any questions)
  • Breakfast and Bowl at Carson Lanes (9am-12pm; breakfast and unlimited bowling until noon $13, $8 kids 8 and younger)
  • Community Yoga with Allison Reitz at Comma Coffee (9am-10am; $10 cash, first class only $5; beginners are welcome; Bring your mind, body, and mat -a limited number of extra mats will be available)
  • Carson City Santa Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (Trains leave every half hour 10am-3pm; Train rides $5, children 3 and under who sit in an adult's lap are free; Refreshments, including hot cocoa, available for purchase; raffle)
  • Cookie Decorating for kids at Genoa Coffee and Candy in Carson Lanes (10am-7pm; one free cookie for kids 10 and under)
  • Holiday Craft Fair at the Carson Mall (Vendors 10am-5pm; Santa photos 10am-6pm)
  • Santa at the Galaxy Theater – Fandango (10am-2pm)
  • Arlington Square Ice Rink (Sessions 10am-1pm, 2pm-5pm, 6pm-9pm; $7/$5 kids, $3 Skate Rental)
  • Bingo fundraiser for Meals on Wheels at the Carson City Senior Center (doors 11am; 12:30pm start; $10 buy in, $5 extra pack, $1 specials; Must be 21+)
  • Barony of Fal Dare, Amtgard Live Action Role Play Plus Combat Group at Mills Park, at the end of Oxoby Loop (12pm-4pm; Foam sword fighting, crafts, classes; child-friendly, under 18 must have a waiver signed by their parents; newcomers welcome, for info email FalDareMonarchy@gmail.com )
  • Family Day at A to Zen: 1803 N. Carson St. (1pm-4pm; live music, art, stories, legos, and more)
  • Intro to Washoe Lake: slide show presentation in the Park Office at Washoe Lake State Park (1pm, please arrive 15 minutes early; $7 per vehicle admission, $5 with Nevada ID)
  • Raiders Booster Club at the Eleventh Frame Lounge in Carson Lanes (vs the San Diego Chargers; 1:25pm; food/drink specials; supervised kids under 21 welcome)
  • Weekly Pool Tournament at Whiskey Tavern (register 1pm; 2pm start; $10 per person)
  • Pool Tournament at Remedy’s (2pm-5pm; $5 buy-in; APA Rules)

Team up with Muscle Powered for a morning ride around Carson City. Meet up at Fremont Elementary by 9 a.m. if you want to get a jump on those New Years’ Resolutions. For a break from the hustle and bustle of the season, head to Comma Coffee for a relaxing yoga class.

  • Auditions for PPI’s production of ‘Bus Stop’ in the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom (2pm; auditions will be a cold reading from the script, bring a theater resume if you have one; All actors selected are expected to join Proscenium Players, Inc. as members)
  • ’Elf Jr. The Musical’ presented by Wild Horse Children’s Theater in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall (2pm; $10, $5 kids)
  • Big Screen Classics: From Here to Eternity at Galaxy Theater- Fandango (2pm; $8.25 adults, $7.50 kids)
  • Carson City Symphony’s 33rd Annual Holiday Treat Concert with the Carson City Symphony Chorus, Carson High Chamber Choir, and Victorian Dancers at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Community Center (Pre-concert entertainment with Consort Canzona at 3pm in the lobby; concert 4pm-6pm; $15 general admission, free for children age 16 and under)
  • Season’s Beatings: Carson Victory Rollers’ Annual Red vs. Green Fundraising Scrimmage in the Community Center Gym (doors 4:30pm, seating limited; Jrs scrimmage 4:45pm, Adults 6:30pm; Ugly Sweater Contest between bouts; Admission is $5 OR a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots)
  • Remembrance and Candle Lighting Service at Walton’s Funerals and Cremations (5pm; for anyone in the Northern Nevada community who has lost a loved one. The service will last about an hour and a half and everyone is welcome)
  • Christmas Spaghetti Feed with Santa at the Mark Twain Community Center: 500 Sam Clemens Ave, Dayton (5pm-7pm; sponsored by Sheriff Antinoro and the We Care program)
  • Gingerbread Social and Silent Auction at Piper’s Opera House, Virginia City (5pm-8pm; free admission; Gingerbread Charity Auction to benefit Virginia City High School’s Music Program; no host bar, treats, raffle)
  • Connected Comedy Night at Connected Naz Nazarene Church: 3569 US Highway 50 E (5pm-6:30pm)
  • Nevada Christmas: music and light display at 1176 Chaparral Ct., Minden – off Stephanie Way (5:30pm-10pm, no show if raining; donation drive for Austin’s House: food, money, gift certificates; please do NOT block or park in driveways)
  • Candy Cane Lane: custom outdoor drive-thru Christmas light display at Carson Valley Inn, Minden (6pm-9pm; Accompanying music can be heard by tuning your car radio to 89.9 FM)
  • Annual World Wide Candle Lighting for all our lost children with Compassion Friends in the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center Lobby: 1535 Medical Parkway (potluck and ornament exchange 6pm-8pm, candle lighting 7pm; For more information, please contact the chapter leader, Tom Schwartz at 775-461-0362 or at info@tcfcarsoncity.org )
