Douglas County and the State of Nevada are hosting an educational event to inform citizens on flood preparation and safety during Flood Awareness Week, Nov. 13-19, 2016. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, November 16, from 2 pm to 7 pm in the North Room of the Douglas County Community and Senior Center.
Douglas County staff, East Fork Fire Protection District, Nevada Department of Transportation, Nevada Division of Water Resources, Army Corps of Engineers, Carson Water Subconservancy District, Nevada Division of Emergency Management, FEMA National Flood Insurance Program, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the National Weather Service will be on site and available to answer a variety of flood related questions.
“We want to encourage residents to come learn about the preliminary changes in the proposed FEMA floodplain maps of the Carson Valley that may affect their property, and talk with the organizations who can provide them with available resources and answers to their questions,” said Douglas County Stormwater Program Manager, Courtney Walker.
Property owners in Douglas County recently received a letter notifying them of proposed changes to the flood zones in the Carson Valley that may affect their properties. Residents are encouraged to attend the Flood Awareness Week event to view the preliminary maps, receive printed maps of their properties, and learn the impact the changed flood zones will have on flood insurance. Many residents’ properties are being removed from the 100-year flood zones. This will be an opportunity to learn about flood protection and inexpensive flood insurance policies on parcels not located within the 100-year flood zones.
Douglas County has set up a web page dedicated to local flood information. The most current information on County flood projects, and information pertaining to Flood Awareness Week, can be found at:
