I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: August 15-16

It’s a blast from the past weekend. Get started with some history at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch with the Naughty Tea Mistresses. A walking tour of our haunted past begins at the corner of Third and Curry with the Downtown Ghost Walk. Celebrate Prohibition-style at the Brewery Arts Center: the annual Speakeasy Swing Dance Party wants to see you in your finest zoot suit or flapper dress. Head back to the Eighties at Living the Good Life; DJ Bobby G is spinning the hits from yesteryear.

SATURDAY: Jazz and Beyond

  • Back to School at Carson Hot Springs (Free 17 and younger admission per paid adult; outdoor pools only; 7am-10pm)
  • Muscle Powered One Hour Trash Mob: Lone Mountain Trail, just north of the Cemetery -meet up at the parking lot located at the southwest corner of Northridge Dr. and New Ridge Dr. (8am-9am; Gloves, trash bags, and water will be available)
  • NAA Exhibit by artist Nancy Clarke at the Carson Visitor Center (8am-5pm)
  • EAA Sierra Chapter #403 Pancake Breakfast at the Chapter Building: 2500 E. College Pkwy (8am; $5; Everyone Welcome)
  • Third Annual Adopt a Vet Poker Run sponsored by Carson Area Chapter 388 Vietnam Veterans of America at Carson City Harley Davidson (same day registration 8:30am; $30, $20 for rider; Run begins 10am; BBQ 1pm-4pm; Live Music 3pm)
  • Third and Curry Farmers Market; Jazz and Beyond: Live Music with CW Bayer (8:30am to1pm)
  • Show and Shine Fundraiser for the SYFL Mavericks Cheerleaders at Johnny Rockets at Carson Lanes (registration 9am-12pm; awards 2pm; $20 entry, open to all cars and bikes)
  • 17th Anniversary Party at Classy Seconds Thrift Shop (9am-4pm; cupcakes, activities, hourly sales, and more)
  • Flea-Market at Silver State Charter School on Mallory Way (9am-5pm)
  • Northern Nevada Antique Power Club 18th Annual Tractor and Engine Show at Valley View Ranch: 1000 East Valley Road, Gardnerville (9am-5pm; $5)
  • 30th Annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival at Bower’s Mansion, Washoe Valley (9:15am-6pm; $20, under 12 free)
  • Muscle Powered Bike Ride: meet by the Muscle Powered bike rack in front of the Community Pool at 841 N. Roop St. (9:40am-11:40am; must wear helmets and closed toed shoes; riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult)

Do you like cars or motorcycles? This is a great weekend for you. The Freaks of Nature have teamed up with the SYFL Cheerleaders for a Show-n-Shine at Johnny Rockets open to all bikes and cars. Help send a scout to camp with the Car Show fundraiser at Fuji Park: you’ll find antique cars, a raffle, and more. Hop on your Harley and join the Vietnam Veterans of America in a poker run to raise funds for Veterans’ Dental Needs; live music and a bbq lunch are included.

  • Second Annual ‘Send a Scout to Camp’ Car and Truck Show Fundraiser at Fuji Park (10am-2pm; awards 3pm; $40; auctions, music, vendors, a Bonneville race car,custom cars and fire trucks on display)
  • Virginia and Truckee Round-trip Steam Train Ride: leave from Carson City Eastgate Depot on Flint Drive, off U.S. Highway 50 East at 10am and Depart Virginia City Depot at 3pm (tickets limited, $52, seniors and veterans $48, kids 3-16 $32, arrive 30 minutes early)
  • Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine Rides at the Nevada State Train Museum (10am-4pm; $8, $4 kids 11 and under)
  • Ferris Family Speaker Series: The Naughty Tea Mistresses of Nevada at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park: 1450 Highway 88, Minden (10am-11am; free, bring a chair)
  • Jazz and Beyond: 12th Annual Art at the Greenhouse with music by the Jakki Ford Duo at the Greenhouse Garden Center: 2450 S. Curry St. (10am-pm; 45+ Artists; Food and beverage sales benefit Carson City school bands)
  • Splash Dogs Dock-jumping Competition at Heritage Park in Gardnerville (11am)

  • Jazz and Beyond: Live Music with Lucky Diamond and the Gents o’ Jive at the Carson Mall (1pm-3pm; free)

I scream, you scream, we all scream for an ice cream social at the Forman-Roberts House. Live music, activities for kids, and a great opportunity to support the Carson City Historical Society. If you prefer pancakes, head over to the Carson City Airport for the monthly pancake breakfast put on by the Experimental Aircraft Association. Don’t forget to pick up some yummy fresh produce at the Third and Curry Farmers Market.

Looking for some music? Jazz and Beyond is still going strong and it’s also the weekend for the Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Fesival. Hit the Carson Cigar Company for live music with Paslow Vibe. The Tahoe Ridge Winery is a great place to relax and listen to the New World Jazz Project. Enjoy yourself in the A to Zen Zen Den with Now or Never. I Love Lucille is full of acoustic jams at the Max Casino. Sassafras is rocking it with Hear Kitty, Kitty and Sapphic Musk.

Are you ready for a party? Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint and the Carson Hot Springs are the venue d’jour. Sassabration runs from noon until midnight with live music, a pool party, vendors, booths, and more; come out and support community unity. Enjoy music on the Capitol Grounds starting at 4:30 p.m. Bring a picnic, a chair or blanket, and friends and family for a lazy evening in the shade. It’s your last chance to head to Douglas County and catch amazing deck-diving dogs in competition. Splash Dogs can be found at Heritage Park.
