Having held out much of this winter, Mother Nature will usher in this first weekend of spring with windy conditions and possible snow showers in the northern part of the Sierra by Sunday night and into Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather system will move into the region Sunday bringing increased southwest west wind across Lake Tahoe creating choppy conditions on the lake. Stronger southwest winds will impact the region late Sunday into Monday with the potential to create slick roads in the Sierra, especially to the north, according to the weather service.

For Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton, it will be a wind event, with a possible spillover of showers, said National Weather Service Forecaster Edan Weishahn.

In the valleys, the winds will begin late Sunday and run the Highway 395 corridor from Susanville to Mammoth. Expect gusts 35 to 45 mph in the valleys and 55 to 65 mph in the canyons, Weishahn said.

“This is definitely going to be a wind event but nothing like early February,” she said, suggesting folks may want to bring in anything that could blow away.

In the mountains, winds Sunday will be gusty, especially along the mountain ridges, with gusts between 80 to 100 mph possibly by late Sunday night, with local gusts between 55 to 65 mph Sunday night.

The weather system is not expected to be significant with regard to snow, with much of the system staying to the north. However, there may be a brief period of snow around the Lake Tahoe basin by Monday morning, said Weishahn.
