Winds are expected to increase Thursday afternoon and evening around Carson City prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for the region.

Winds will gust up to 35 mph Thursday afternoon and evening, mainly near and north of Highway 50 in far western Nevada and near and east of Highway 395 in northeast California.

The Red Flag Warning is from 1 to 8 p.m. tonight. Winds are expected to be out of the southwest, 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, according to the weather service.

The gusty winds will bring high fire danger. The weather service advises to take precautions to avoid starting a fire. In addition to the increased fire danger, winds on Pyramid Lake and Lahontan and Rye Patch Reservoirs are expected to bring dangerous boating conditions (swamping or capsizing possible) for small watercraft Thursday afternoon and evening.

High temperatures around Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, Thursday through Sunday will be in the low to mid 90s, according to the weather service.
