Weather systems will move into the region this week, bringing much-needed rain to the valleys around Carson City and snow to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
The first cold front will move eastward toward the west coast Tuesday and bring increasing winds to the Sierra and western Nevada. Wind gusts Tuesday and early Tuesday night will approach 45 mph in valley locations with locally stronger winds in wind prone areas. Ridge gusts will approach 100 mph.
Some mountain snow accumulations are possible Tuesday night and Wednesday with scattered snow showers lowering to 4,500 feet by late Wednesday morning and showers in the western valleys of Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County.
There are no watches or warnings at this time for Western Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The heavier snows, according to the weather service, will be on the western slope of the Sierra. Preliminary snow totals are expected to be a foot to 18 inches in the higher crest elevations of the Sierra, four to eight inches around the Lake Tahoe Basin and a couple inches in the foothills.
