The first day of the Carson Valley Quilt Guild’s seventh annual quilt show took place Saturday in the main gymnasium at Carson High School. The theme of this year’s show was “Nevada Then and Now,” and is primarily focused on celebrating 150 years of statehood in none other than Nevada.
There was no shortage of quilts on display, with wall to wall coverage and limitless display stands which consumed the entirety of the gym. Debbie Pastini, a member of the Carson Valley Quilt Guild, and Maggi Davis, owner of the Cagey Quilter store in Carson Valley, were two of the members in attendance.
“Quilting is what you did back in the day to keep your family warm and has evolved into a functional art form,” said Debbie. Maggi enjoys the process of quilting because you get to come to together with friends with similar desires, because it’s therapeutic, and because it’s how she is able to share and fulfill her own personal love of quilting.
Vicki Finchum was another member of the guild who was also in attendance for the event. Vicki is the Vice President of the guild and is also a professional quilter. She finds her love of quilting (30 years’ worth of it) from her heritage and her passion for art.
“A lot of our grandmas were quilters back when we were kids so when we were finally able to do it, we felt the need to keep the tradition going. It is important to remember our past," she said.
The event also comes with a staggering amount of raffle prizes that contain an extensive array of goodies and prize baskets. The second day to come attend the event is Sunday at Carson High School in Carson City anytime from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $10, but is well worth it to see some of the elegantly crafted quilts up close and in person.
