UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory through Monday for Carson City, Dayton and much of Western Nevada.
Strong high pressure over Nevada will bring mostly sunny and very hot conditions through early this evening. Areas in western Nevada will reach triple digits with many areas in the Sierra reaching the upper 80's to low 90's. Anticipated highs for Dayton are 103 today, and 102 for Carson City, and near 100 in Carson Valley, according to the weather service.
Record high temperatures will likely be set over many locations. Temperatures at night will also be well above normal, especially in urban areas.
High temperatures between 101 and 106 degrees today, locally up to 108 in west central Nevada and east of Highway 95.
The affected areas include greater Reno, Carson City, Dayton and Carson Valley areas, as well as Fallon, Fernley, Silver Springs and Lovelock. The heat advisory is through 6 p.m. Monday.
Impacts of this heat wave include increased risk of heat related illness, especially for the elderly and people more senstive to hot temperatures.
Bring pets inside.
Take extra precaustions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening, the weather service advises.
Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke such as dizziness, nausea, or difficulting breathing. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
