Gusty winds and rain will develop early this morning for the Carson City region, prompting the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a wind advisory through 5 p.m. this afternoon.

The storm looks as though it will be heaviest in areas outside of Carson City with a winter storm warning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra and a high wind warning for areas east and south of Carson City, especially in Mono, Mineral and southern Lyon counties, according to CarsonWeather.com.

The wind advisory extends to the greater Reno and Carson City areas, south to Carson Valley and east into Virginia City. Gusty winds will cause difficult driving conditions on Interstate 80 and highways 50 and 395, according to CarsonWeather.com.

Rain is expected with the system for Carson City and Reno, while heavy snow is expected for the Sierra. The winter storm warning is in effect through 11 tonight for Lake Tahoe, with 1 to 2 feet expected above 7,000 feet; up to a foot west of Highway 89 and 4 to 8 inches below 7,000 feet. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph is expected through the basin and up to 100 mph can be expected along Sierra ridges, according to the weather service.

An earlier storm this weekend brought up to 27 inches of snow to Lake Tahoe ski resorts.

Hazardous road conditions and whiteout conditions are expected with the storm, especially in the Sierra. Click here for the latest road controls, delays and conditions. For the very latest in Carson City weather go to www.CarsonWeather.com.
