Thunderstorms, some possibly quite heavy, are expected through at least 6 tonight in Carson City and Carson Valley, Dayton and Virginia City, according to the National Weather Service.
The storms will continue to develop late this afternoon from Reno south, producing moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds to 45 mph.
Travelers along Interstate 80, 580, and Highway 50, Highway 395, and State Route 431 and 341 may be impacted by heavy rain and gusty winds, according to the weather service.
Moderate to heavy rain could produce slick roads, while gusty outflow winds may lead to areas of blowing dust.
Meanwhile, a Red Flag Warning for thunderstorms is in effect from 11 p.m. Thursday night until 11 a.m. Friday morning for the north eastern and northern Sierra in California.
Thunderstorms are expected to move through the central Sierra in the afternoon with scattered elevated thunderstorms developing overnight.
These thunderstorms in North East California will have less rainfall and higher potential of dry lightning. New fire starts are possible throughout the Sierra, but the area of greatest concern is in the northern Sierra overnight.
If you see fire or smell smoke, call 911, the weather service advises.
