UPDATE: A Dense Smoke Advisory has been extended until 8 p.m. Tuesday for Carson City, Dayton, Carson Valley, Reno and Lake Tahoe areas, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Depending on the amount of smoke, it could be further extended. As of 7:25 p.m. Monday the King Fire has burned 87,592 acres and is 18 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.
A dense smoke advisory is issued when smoke from wildfires significantly reduces visibilities making it difficult to see and breath. The smoke will continue to be a problem until the fires are extinguished, according to the weather service. Those in the advisory areas are urged to avoid prolonged exposure to the smoke and to stay indoors.
The image above shows the probable areas of smoke through Wednesday based on forecast wind information and assuming the King Fire remains active. Southwest winds will keep the smoke area in the general same area through Wednesday.
Smoke will reduce visibility and obscure terrain as well as reduce air quality at times in the color shaded areas.
For Monday, smoke should start rolling into the region this afternoon with visibility dropping to around a mile at times, especially during the late afternoon and evening when additional smoke from the King Fire is most likely to spread into western Nevada.
Periods of dense smoke may could cause unhealthy air quality and outdoor activities are discouraged. Travel may be impacted due to low visibility, along I-580 Carson City Freeway, Highways 50 and 395 and Interstate 80.
