Key free-throws late in the game helped the Carson High varsity boys basketball team pull away from Bishop Manogue, 50-40, to preserve their unbeaten record, now at 15-0 in the Sierra League.
The visiting Miners cut Carson’s lead to just two points, 40-38, with about three minutes left to play in the fourth period.
But the Senators went on an 8-0 run, including six straight free-throws to build a 10-point advantage with just over a minute left in the game.
Cody Acevedo, Jace Keema, and Jayden DeJoseph each sunk two free-throws apiece in succession of each other to give Carson a cushioned lead going into the game’s final minute of play.
In total, Carson outscored Manogue 10-2 down the last stretch of the game.
The Senators trailed through much of the first half, by three points at the end of the opening period and by four points at half time.
But Carson High got hot in the third period, outscoring the Miners 14-2 and never looking back from there.
Although Manogue did close to within a bucket of tying the game in the fourth quarter, the Senators took advantage of multiple fouls committed by the Miners and went back to the basics, sinking consecutive free-throws in the clutch.
Tez Allen led the Senators with 20 points, and teammate Jayden DeJoseph added eight points.
The Carson High boys, 13-5 overall, wrap up their regular season at home Friday night against Carson Valley arch rival Douglas.
