Strong afternoon winds and low humidity have prompted a Red Flag Warning by the National Weather Service for much of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

While the wind is helping push some of the Rim Fire smoke out of Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County, it has also created critical fire weather conditions because of the low humidity created, according to the weather service.

The winds are from a low pressure off the Oregon coast that is moving inland. The windy conditions began developing this morning, with the strongest to spread east into Lyon County and the basin range by afternoon.

Wind will be out of the southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph and 45 mph in wind prone areas. Ridge gusts could reach 65 mph.

The Red Flag Warning continues until 11 p.m.
