Mike's Pharmacy in Carson City will host what may be its final Turkey Round Up on Tuesday. The annual event, now in its 17th year, collects frozen turkeys to fill Salvation Army holiday food baskets for Carson City area families in need. The owners of the pharmacy at 1007 N Curry St, announced the pharmacy would be closing after the annual Round Up.
Each year hundreds of needy families depend on Mike’s Pharmacy and the generosity of locals to give so the Salvation Army can provide turkeys for Thanksgiving dinners. News Talk KOH, which is also a sponsor, will be live at Mike's located at 1007 North Curry St from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Salvation Army will distribute the turkeys from the round up through several agencies including FISH, Ron Wood, Washoe Valley Food Bank, Carson Valley Community Food Bank and the Tahoe Community Food Bank to help them serve families in need, said Lt. Mark Cyr, officer in-charge of the Carson City Salvation Army.
Mike Hautekeet, of Mike’s Pharmacy, has been heading up this turkey drive for 17 years and has one strict rule about all donated turkeys: “All turkeys must be dead and frozen.”
Those who wish to help can bring frozen turkeys to the Turkey Round Up or cash donations can be made so the Salvation Army can buy turkeys.
If you are unable to bring a turkey donations can be made by credit card by calling Mike’s at 775-841-1400 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the day of the Round Up. Checks can be mailed to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 956 Carson City, NV 89702.
